Survivors of Ted Stevens Plane Crash Waved Down Plane to Rescue Them
It was a waving hand emerging from the recent Ted Stevens plane crash that alerted another plane flying overhead that there were survivors below, the Associated Press reports.
The plane was carrying the politician and his friends to a lodge for an annual fishing trip when it crashed. Rescue workers responded after hearing that there were survivors aboard the aircraft.
The National Guard performed the rescue and removed the four survivors from the scene. Many suffered broken bones and other injuries, but had not said much in reference to why the plane may have gone down.
"They didn't do too much talking with us," Alaska Air National Guard Senior Master Sergeant Jonathan Davis, told the news source. "If they did talk, they were asking for pain medication, and we helped them with that."
An investigation is underway into the cause of the crash that killed five people in all, including the former senator and to determine what measures may have been taken to prevent the tragic event.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reports that there were 1,559 airplane accidents in U.S. civil aviation in 2008.
Popular Mechanics reports that it is possible to survive a plane crash if surrounded by a semiprotective cocoon of debris. Smaller people are also more likely to survive a fall.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has been pushing a new technology that provides pilots with better weather information. There is a plan to have all aircrafts flying in certain controlled air space to be required to have the technology installed by 2020.
Surviving a plane crash may be a traumatic experience that may also cause psychological issues, such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Survivors of an event like a plane crash are encouraged to seek guidance from a mental health professional to manage a treatment plan.
