Sarah Beach Survived a Bus Crash That Claimed the Life of Her Best Friend
Sarah Beach was 16 when she was on her way to a soccer playoff game with her best friend Ashley Brown. The bus swerved on a rainy highway and crashing, NBC affiliate KXAN reports.
The accident claimed the life of Brown and one other student and left several other severely injured including Beach. She suffered a shoulder injury that left bone exposed, severed tendons in her wrist and sustained deep cuts on her arms. She ended up spending more than a month recovering in hospital as a result.
This accident prompted lawmakers in Texas to enact a law that requires all school districts buying new buses to have safety belts. The law recently went into effect and supporters are hoping that it will help curtail injuries or deaths related to school bus crashes.
Beach worked with lawmakers to get the legislation passed and she said that the memory of her friend kept her motivated.
"I'll see her one day," she told the news source. "I miss her every day...I love her, and I miss her. She's my daily inspiration in life."
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) records thousands of highway accidents every year. The organization investigates between 30 and 40 of those accidents, and of those they send an on-site team to about six crash scenes.
They conduct the investigations to determine causes of the crash, and to help to determine what safety precautions may need to be implemented on highways and vehicle
Through safety alerts, the organization alerts the public about rising trends in accidents, fatalities and provides citizens with information that helps them make informed decisions when deciding to get behind the wheel of a vehicle.
