Matt Ertman Survived Freak Accident at a Demolition Derby
Matt Ertman was participating in a demolition derby when his car suddenly burst into flames, CBS affiliate KIMT reports.
Ertman has competed in the event for more than a decade and had never encountered such a situation. He said that when his car caught fire it came as a complete surprise to him, since he didn't think he had hit anyone hard enough to spark such an intense reaction.
"I mean it wasn't even a real aggressive hit, you know it was just a bump basically, that's all it took and I'm guessing either sparks off my bumper or ignited it or I don't know how it happened but it was just a bad deal," he told the news source.
It has been two months since the explosion and Ertman is recovering well. Sixteen percent of his body was badly burned, mainly on his right arm. He still has some healing to do, and must remain out of work for the next year. His family and friends are organizing a demolition derby to help raise funds to cover the costs of his living and medical expenses.
Injuries sustained in an explosion or fire may be traumatic and lead to burn injuries which may be life threatening.
The American Burn Association (ABA) states that there are over 500,000 individuals who received medical treatment for burns in 2007.
The organization is dedicated to improving the lives of those who have been affected by a burn injury. Through education, research, legislative advocacy and patient care they hope to help all people who are suffering as a result of a fire or burn.
The ABA also has a burn care resource directory which lists all of the burn centers in the United States.
