Martin King-Sheard was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and after he beat the illness he set out to accomplish eight challenges, the BBC reports.

The 35-year-old father of two was completely shocked when he heard the diagnosis, but three weeks into treatment he decided to plan his future for after he beat the disease.

As an avid runner, he had participated in several running events, and decided that he would now focus on other challenges that he'd always though of but never pursued.

"When I got over all the chemo I sat down and started talking to my wife about what I'd like to do - there was actually a list of things to do just to prove to myself and the world that I was better and getting back into shape," he told the news source.

The first challenge was to grow his hair back, which he did. Other challenges included bungee jumping, a triathlon, climbing 15 of the peaks of Snowdonia above 3,000 feet in 24 hours and a two-day bike ride. He has two more challenges left, one of which is sky diving which he'll be doing with his wife.

According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is one of the most common cancers in the United States. There will be an estimated 65,540 people diagnosed with the disease this year, including both adults and children. The risk of developing the illness in one's lifetime is about 1 in 50.

The ACS offers detailed information on the illness, which includes how it originates in the body, the different courses of treatment offered and steps that should be taken during follow-up care.
