Madeleine Bombelli was told she would never have children - she is now pregnant
Madeleine Bombelli was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare cancer that affects bone and soft tissue, in 2002 and underwent an aggressive treatment regimen, The Daily Record reports.
Bombelli's battle with cancer reached a frightening moment when the disease had taken a toll on her health and she was near death, but she fought through it and was in remission in 2004.
She met her now husband, Paul Bamford, that same year she went into remission and they fell in love. Her intensive chemotherapy treatment had left her with kidney issues, and because of that she was told she would be unable to conceive.
During a kidney scan she thought her cancer may have returned because had been feeling very tired and had aches and pains. She noticed that the nurse conducting the scan was shuffling about, which worried her even more. When she was told the news that she was pregnant, said she was overcome with emotion, she was pregnant.
"Discovering I was pregnant was the most incredible experience of my life. I still can't believe it. When she told me I was pregnant, I just let out a scream and started crying my eyes out," she told the news source.
According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), Ewing's Sarcoma is an extremely rare form of cancer that is apart of a group of tumors referred to as the Ewing's family of tumors. All forms of the disease originate in the bone and nearby soft tissue. The disease is most common among those in their early teens, but can occur at any age.
The organization reports that 2 out 3 of the cancer occurs in those between that ages of 10 and 20. Also, the illness is more common among whites than any other racial group.
The ACS provides an overview of the disease and lists the types of treatment that is administered to those who have been diagnosed with the cancer. They also provide information for survivors of the illness and steps they may take after treatment has been completed and the cancer is in remission.
