Five years ago, Sally Bee suffered a series of heart attacks - in fact, three in one week - that almost killed her. She was subsequently diagnosed with Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection, a congenital heart defect, but miraculously survived and is currently thriving as a TV presenter and an author of a book of healthy recipes, according to media reports.
In the wake of her heart attacks, Bee hired a nanny for her three children and her husband took a year off from work to help her recover. As she pushed herself to do a bit more every day, the 42-year-old starting to pay more attention to her diet, and began to experiment with heart healthy recipes, according to the Irish Independent.
In time, she also began counseling other heart patients, an occupation that has proven to be deeply rewarding. "I've got a voice [and] people need to be educated after a heart attack," she told the news provider.
"I'm having an adventure and I'm loving it. Life isn't worse than before. In many ways it's better," she added.
The Centers for Disease Control says heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S., killing more than 600,000 Americans each year.
However, even though some cases are hereditary, it is possible to modify one's lifestyle to reduce the risk and live a full, thriving life. In particular, physical exercise and a diet rich in fresh produce and low in red meats have been shown to bring health benefits.
Those who would like to support efforts to educate society about the dangers of heart disease and ways to prevent it may donate to the American Heart Association. This and other organizations also offer valuable information and resources for survivors and their families.
