Domestic violence survivor Johanna Orozco shares her story with Oprah
Johanna Orozco has become a beacon of hope for victims of domestic violence. The young woman, who was shot in the face by her ex-boyfriend with a shotgun in 2007, is now an advocate for those who are survivors of all forms of domestic abuse, WEWS 5 reports.
The 18-year-old Cleveland school student was recently invited on Oprah to talk about her story of survival. The courageous young woman has not let that ordeal stop her from thriving, and she is now giving back to her community.
She now works for the Domestic Violence Center as a teen educator and has become a vocal advocate of teen dating violence prevention.
The Domestic Violence Resource Center estimates that one in four women has experienced domestic violence in their lifetime. Women account for 85 percent of the victims of intimate partner violence incidents. They also report that people with lower annual incomes, below $25,000, are three times more likely to be victims of domestic violence.
The DVRC is an excellent resource for both survivors of domestic abuse and their families. The organization provides information on what is domestic abuse and what the signs of it are. They also have community outreach services that train individualson how to prevent domestic abuse. They also provide counseling and group support, a 24 hour hotline, and a shelter for those who are victims of violence and abuse.
