When he was 12 years old Chris Keith learned that his family did not die in a car accident like he had been told. Their deaths were far more tragic and upsetting, CNN reports.

Keith's grandparents told him the story about how, when he was 5 years old, his father killed his mother and brother and shot Keith in the head, leaving him for dead. His father then turned the gun on himself, taking his own life. Keith survived the attack, but found himself searching for answers after memories of the event came flooding back to him.

"I didn't want to give up," he told the news source. "I firmly believe Jesus had his hands on me, saying, 'Somebody is going to come for you.'"

Keith is now 30, and has a family of his own, and works hard everyday to not end up like his father, he told the news provider.

Keith shares his story with church youth groups and juvenile justice centers, reminding kids that they are never alone and that they shouldn't feel like they can't do anything. He firmly believes God had a plan for him in life and that is why he survived.
