Little Maria Maura Chan is in an intensive care unit of a Long Island hospital and expected to survive the deadly Brooklyn fire that killed five people, including her mother who died saving her and her brother.
The baby's father Miguel has been spending most of his time at her side, grieving the loss of his wife but relieved to have Maria and her 2-year old brother Josias still with him, according to New York Daily News.
"I have pain in the heart," Miguel Chan told the news provider. However, he promptly added that he believed his wife "died in the flesh, but her soul didn't."
The family is also receiving comfort from their local church where friends and strangers alike have been praying and organizing donations of money and clothes, the Daily News reports.
The Centers for Disease Control says home fires killed 2,580 and injured another 12,925 Americans in 2006. However, many tragedies can be avoided if smoke detectors and fire extinguishers are properly installed.
According to the Office of Emergency Management, during a fire emergency it is best to crawl low in smoke towards the nearest exit covering the mouth with a cloth and once outside never go back.
Moreover, tall buildings should be evacuated via stairs not elevators, which can act as chimneys during a fire.
As many fires start in the kitchen, the source suggests keeping combustible items away from the cooking area, and never pouring water on grease fires. A fire extinguisher or a lid over the burning pan should be used instead.
