Groceries vs. medicine? Rent vs. heat? One meal vs. two? Almost half of California's elderly face these impossible choices each day, according to a new study from UCLA's Center for Health Policy Research.

The report reveals that 47 percent of California's seniors -- 65 and older -- can't pay for basic needs.  That means 864,000 seniors are left to fend for themselves, with more than half struggling alone at home.  Older women, Latino elders and the very old (over 75) are especially at risk, the study found.
