The worst case of alcohol abuse is a host of health problems that could lead to death. These include chronic diseases such as liver cirrhosis (damage to liver cells), pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), various cancers, including liver, mouth, throat, larynx (the voice box), and esophagus, high blood pressure, and psychological disorders. These health complications can lead to expensive hospital visits and eventually death.Excessive alcohol consumption also increases your chances of unintentional injuries. If alcoholics drive while intoxicated, they are also at higher risk for traffic accidents which can also kill innocent people. However, intoxicated people also risk other accidents like falls, drowning, burns and firearm injuries. Alcohol abuse also leads to violence, such as child maltreatment, homicide, and suicide.Alcohol abuse also increases the risk to unborn babies. Alcohol can severely harm a developing fetus if a woman drinks while pregnant. Babies can be born with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders which make them more susceptible to drug or alcohol abuse, violent outbursts, and emotional problems. Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is also a risk for pregnant mothers who drink.Relationships are often ruined from alcohol dependency. A partner may become violent or abusive while intoxicated. If your partner is an alcoholic they may often apologize for their behavior the next day but continue to drink in the future. Please seek help for yourself first and make sure you are in a safe environment.
