An aneurysm is a bulge or “ballooning” in the wall of an artery (the blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood from the heart to other parts of the body). If an aneurysm grows large enough, it can burst and cause dangerous bleeding, a stroke, or even death. There are various types of aneurysms (from abdominal to cerebral), but they all can be very harmful.

An aneurysm can form from any condition which causes the walls of the artery to weaken. Most aneurysms are caused from atherosclerosis and high blood pressure. Sometimes, infections or penetrating wounds can cause an aneurysm to form.
