Alpine skiing champion and gold medal favorite Lindsey Vonn sustained a painful shin bruise during last week's training session in Austria. Even thought the injury has limited her time on the slopes in recent days, the athlete still plans to compete in all five categories during the Vancouver Olympic Games that begin tomorrow.

Her doctors and family members stress Vonn is ready to train despite the fact that initially she could not even put her boots on.

"She was in pain," said her husband Thomas, quoted by the news source. He added that her Thursday morning training session was successful "considering what we've been through."

And the 25-year-old demonstrated resilience and a fighting spirit when she posted a note on Twitter saying that although her warm-up was still painful, "it was good enough to give it a shot in the training run. Wish me luck!"

According to the National Ski Areas Association, during the 10 years leading up to 2006, about 38 people have died in skiing or snowboarding accidents every year.

Safety expert suggest skiers select slopes whose difficulty is appropriate to their skill level and always wear helmets. Everyone who sustains a head injury while skiing should see a doctor for evaluation as some potentially fatal injuries may take time to develop symptoms.

Survivors may consult the website of the Trauma Research Institute, which may help them lead thriving lives in the wake of a sports accident.
