The first step to diagnosing anxiety is to be evaluated by a doctor. Although there are no laboratory tests to specifically diagnose mental illness, the doctor may use various tests to make sure something else isn't causing anxiety-related symptoms [such as?]. If no other illness is found, you may be referred to a psychiatrist or psychologist who can evaluate a person for a mental illness.

The standard manual used by experts for the diagnosis of recognized mental illness in the U.S. is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder (DSM), which is compiled by the American Psychiatric Association.

Two effective anxiety disorder treatments include cognitive-behavioral therapy — which helps a person identify and challenge negative thinking patterns — and exposure therapy, in which someone is constantly exposed to his or her fears, which allows the person to gain a sense of control and familiarity with those fears.

In addition, a variety of medications, including benzodiazepines and antidepressants, are used in the treatment of anxiety disorders. As always, medication is most effective when combined with behavioral therapy. Behavioral therapy targets the thoughts and actions that cause anxiety and helps the patient to change it while the medication reduces feelings of anxiety and panic rather quickly. When compared to those who use medication alone, anxiety sufferers treated with both therapy and medication benefit from a greater reduction in symptoms and a lower risk of relapse.

There are natural ways to reduce stress and anxiety as well. Some of these methods including exercise, relaxation techniques, mindfulness meditation, progressive muscle relaxation, controlled breathing, and visualization can reduce anxiety and increase feelings of relaxation and emotional well-being.

Whichever route you choose to help you overcome your anxiety, it's important to know that you are not alone, and that treatment is possible.
