Depression is a mental illness that affects the brain and can cause people to feel varying degrees of pain and suffering. People experiencing depression may have difficulty with their usual work or school routine, as well as their relationships. The most self-destructive thing a depression survivor can do is just disappear, failing to show up for work or other obligations. If left untreated for too long, depression can take over a person's life completely. Some people who suffer from depression feel there is no way out, and can sometimes resort to hurting themselves or others -- in some cases even resorting to suicide.

Suicide is a very serous risk of untreated depression. According to SAVE.org, the majority of the people who take their lives suffered an underlying mental illness or substance abuse problem at the time of their death.

Living with depression doesn't mean you or someone you love who suffers from depression is suicidal -- millions of people live with depression and never attempt or die by suicide. However if you have thoughts of suicide, or a loved one has expressed to you suicidal thoughts or tendencies, it is important to seek help immediately.
