Clearly heart disease can lead to heart attack and stroke, which can result in brain damage or death. A heart attack occurs when blood flow to a section of the heart muscle becomes blocked. If the blood flow is not restored quickly then the section of the heart that has been deprived of oxygen begins to die. If you or someone you are with seems to be having a heart attack - get help quickly by dialing 9-1-1. If the symptoms of a heart attack are not treated quickly, then the patient might die. A stroke occurs when blood is prevented access to the brain through either a blocked artery or a broken blood vessel. When this happens, the lack of oxygen begins to kill brain cells and can cause severe brain damage. Strokes are the leading cause of adult disability.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in America. Yet as common and fatal as heart disease can be, it can be surprisingly difficult to prepare for. Recovery from a heart attack can be a challenging process.
