Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic functional disorder in which the bowels (intestines) do not work or function properly. The disorder affects the colon which is the part of the digestive tract that stores the stool.

It is usually defined by bowel irregularity, which can mean going to the bathroom too often, too infrequently, or phases of both.

IBS can be difficult to diagnose because the cause of IBS is not always clear. People with IBS appear to have extra sensitive nerves and muscles in the bowels. These muscles may contract too much when you eat, and these contractions can cause cramping and diarrhea during or shortly after a meal. The nerves might also react when the bowel stretches causing cramping or pain.
