Because autism is a spectrum disorder, some people only have mild symptoms while others are suffer severe disabilities. The worst case of autism is that the person will be unable to interact on a proficient level and will need care for his or her entire life. These children will interact with others at the most minimal level. Some people may remain mute throughout their lives, others may never learn how to properly use a toilet. Some people with autism cannot attend regular school because their behavior is disruptive, and cannot be controlled. Many children with severe autism do eventually live in institutions or group homes and will never be able to live independently; others rely on their family members.
These groups offer support for those affected by autism. If your child or family member has autism please reach out to these groups. Start or join a support group through The Survivors Club. The larger your support network, the easier you can work through the disorder.
