The worst case of an auto accident is death. The chance of an auto accident greatly increases if a driver is intoxicated with alcohol or other substances. An such a driver will receive strict penalties for driving while intoxicated. In addition to the risk of fatalities, property damage can occur. Vehicular damage can be expensive, and if a driver is uninsured, this may lead to major debts.

Some of the largest auto accidents include multi-vehicle pileups. Many of these accidents occur from whiteout conditions where visibility is greatly reduced. On February 14, 2010 over one hundred vehicles including two buses collided in a several concurrent pileups in the Kansas City area. These were due to conditions of nearly zero visibility. One of the largest in history occurred on March 20, 2008 in the Vysočina Region of the Czech Republic. 231 vehicles were involved in this large crash, 30 people were injured.
