Peter Riley was involved in a four-car crash that left him with many injuries but a new outlook on life, reports Sunshine Coast Daily.
Riley does not remember much from that day but he does know that the accident was serious. A car crossed into his lane and hit him along with two other cars. Riley was rushed to the hospital where his prognosis was bleak.
Luckily, Riley survived and is on the road to recovery after surviving several surgeries that left him with metal rods in his body.
"I have a rod from my knee right up to my hip where it is screwed in. I have a rod from the bottom of my knee to my ankle and I have two plates in the front of my leg and screws in the bottom of my ankle," he told the news source.
According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, a total of 16,520 Americans died in passenger car crashes in 2007 and 1,475,000 were injured in 2006.
Experts say that excessive speed and intoxication are the main factors behind most car accidents, so they recommend complying with local speed limits and refraining from driving after drinking alcohol or using drugs.
Experts also suggest passengers and drivers use a seatbelt to improve their chances of surviving motor vehicle accidents.
