Another story of exceptional endurance and will to survive emerged Friday. According to media reports, a woman - thrown into a lake following a road accident - was nonetheless able to swim to shore despite having a severed leg.

The accident happened late Thursday night in Lake County, Florida, and involved three vehicles, including a motorcycle - on which the woman was riding as a passenger - and an SUV, according to ClickOrlando.com, a local news source.

Three people were airlifted to hospital in the wake of the crash and are all believed to have survived, the website says, quoting the Florida Highway Patrol.

According to the most recent data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, a total of 16,520 Americans died in passenger car crashes in 2007 and 1,475,000 were injured in 2006.

Since excessive speed and intoxication are the main factors behind most of such accidents, safety experts recommend complying with local speed limits and refraining from driving after drinking alcohol or using drugs.
