Lewis Bailey, a British paratrooper, suffered life altering injuries after he fell four floors from his hotel balcony while vacationing in Spain reports Evening Star.

The 19 year-old broke his back and leg shattering his knee cap in 5 places from the 30-foot drop.

Doctors thought his chances of survival were bleak and warned his family that he would never walk again.

Following surgery in Spain and at home in the U.K., the young soldier is now walking with the aid of crutches and a leg support. His three week recovery astounded the doctors, who have nick-named Bailey their “little walking miracle.”

His mother was there for his first steps, again. He took 12; she counted. “He will be able to walk again as they did another operation which helped to save the vertebrae,” his mother said. Bailey has undergone extensive surgery and will have a metal rod through both his spine and his leg.

But he is not deterred from his assignment with his fellow paratroopers who have been very supportive. He is excited to rejoin his section which will be going off to Afghanistan without him.

“He is coping with the physical injuries very well but he is upset about Afghanistan - that his section is now a man down,” his mother said. His troop was vacationing in Ibiza, Spain before their assignment in Afghanistan.

At home, Bailey is eager to show everyone how much he can walk and tests his limits everyday.

He is currently under going intensive physical therapy at his come in Sutton Coldfield but eagerly awaits full recovery so he can return to his line of duty.
