If you live in an area that has frequently had tornadoes or tornado warnings in the past, it is very important that you are prepared for one if it comes your way. Preparation will help you recover from a tornado. Be aware of the weather conditions and if there is a warning, seek shelter immediately. Know where you can find shelter in your house or community, and store enough food and water for your family including pets for three days of survival.
Remember that recovering from a natural disaster like a tornado is usually a gradual process, and safety of yourself and your family is the top priority. It is important to know what assistance may be available so that accessing it can be easier and less stressful.
If the President of the United States declares a Major Disaster, the federal government will help an affected area with temporary housing, counseling, low-interest loans, and other assistance including help for small businesses and farmers. Throughout the recovery period, monitor local radio and television reports for information about where to get emergency resources. Direct assistance may come from organizations like the American Red Cross or the Salvation Army among others. They provide shelter and help with clean-up efforts.
