The blizzard that has followed the Eastern coastline throughout this weekend dropping tens of inches of snowfall will begin to diminish from south to north today and tonight, but the strong winds will lead to some significant blowing and drifting, reports The Weather Channel.

The storm that began in the Southern states and gave Atlanta, Georgia its first White Christmas since 1881, passed through Philadelphia, New York and now New England.

Over one thousand flights were canceled in the New York City area Sunday stranding thousands of holiday travelers who spent the night either sleeping on grounded planes or in the airport terminals. The airports are expected to reopen Monday afternoon, reports Reuters. Ground travel around New York City, eastern New Jersey and western Long Island which were the hardest hit by the blizzard has also been disrupted by the storm, which unleashed powerful winds and dumped up to 29 inches on the area, reports the U.S. National Weather Service.

Philadelphia also experienced 11.8 inches of snow recorded by the National Weather Service at the Philadelphia International Airport. The Philadelphia Eagles' game with the Minnesota Vikings was moved to Tuesday night because of poor weather conditions, reports MyFoxPhilly.com.

Through Monday, the blizzard will bring travel to a standstill along the coastline of northern New England through Massachusetts and Maine, reports AccuWeather.com. Travel in the Boston area will be nearly impossible Monday as strong winds gusting past 40 mph will lead to blowing and drifting snow, hindering cleanup efforts.
